The Traditional Roller Shades

Where did roller blinds come from? The history of roller blinds dates back to the 18th century, originating in Europe. Initially, they were simple, functional window coverings made from cloth or paper, and were operated by a simple pulley system. By the 19th century, with the advent of the Industrial Revolution, roller blinds evolved in material and mechanism, incorporating spring-loaded rollers for easier operation. Their popularity surged due to their practicality and affordability. In the 20th century, advancements in materials led to the introduction of more durable and varied fabrics, including vinyl and solar-blocking layers.

Traditional roller blinds operate on a simple yet effective mechanism. They consist of a fabric sheet attached to a rolling mechanism, mounted at the top of the window. When the blind is lowered, the fabric unrolls to cover the window, providing light control and privacy. To raise the blind, a cord or chain, often found on one side, is pulled, causing the fabric to roll back onto the mechanism, thereby opening up the window. The simplicity of their design makes them a popular choice for efficient and effective window covering.

It’s pretty clear the roller blind is truly a blind for those who crave simplicity and easy functionality when it comes to their window arrangement. In later times, roller blinds have increased this seamless functionality through the inclusion of mechanics that have allowed it to achieve a more modern presentation.

Smartglide Roller Blinds

Smartglide Roller blinds represent a more advanced and user-friendly approach to window coverings. Unlike traditional roller blinds that rely on cords or chains, Smartglide blinds operate through a cordless system, enhancing safety, especially in homes with children or pets, who could be more vulnerable to the loose chain. This system typically involves gently pulling or pushing the bottom rail of the blind to raise or lower it. The mechanism inside the blind's tube allows it to glide smoothly up or down, and stay in place when released.

The sleek and cordless design of Smartglide blinds offers a modern and clutter-free aesthetic, making them a popular choice for contemporary homes.

Smart Release Roller Blinds

The Smart Release Roller blind is similar to the Smart Glide, however its main difference is the Smart Release still comes with the cord. Activate the blind by gently tugging the opposite direction of your chain, and watch as your roller blind gently rolls itself down to the bottom of the window automatically, just like electric blinds. Smart Release can be stopped by a slight tug on the other end of the chain when you want the blind to stop lowering.

This option still affords you the option of having the cord for added control, whilst still utilising the convenience of modern mechanics.

Beyond nifty, modern mechanics, the roller blind has also evolved in its appearance.

Blockout Roller Blinds

Blockout roller blinds are designed to provide complete darkness in a room by blocking out all external light. They are made from a dense, opaque fabric that doesn't allow light to penetrate, making them perfect for bedrooms, home theatres, or any spaces where control over light is essential. In addition to light control, blockout blinds also offer privacy, and can contribute to energy efficiency by providing insulation, helping to keep a room warmer in winter and cooler in summer. The roller blinds operate on a simple rolling mechanism, which can be manual or motorised, and they roll up neatly when not in use, maintaining a clean and uncluttered look.

Sunscreen Roller Blinds

Sunscreen roller blinds are designed to provide a balance between visibility and protection from sunlight. Made from a semi-transparent fabric that filters and diffuses natural light, these blinds reduce glare and block harmful UV rays. This protects interior furnishings from sun damage and fading. They allow for a view of the outside, while providing privacy during the day. Sunscreen blinds are ideal for areas where you want to enjoy natural light without the harshness of direct sunlight, like living rooms, the kitchen, or your home office.

The fabric used in sunscreen blinds typically has an open weave, offering heat reduction and energy efficiency by keeping rooms cooler. Available in various weave densities and colours, they can complement different interior styles. These blinds are durable, easy to clean, and can be paired with other window treatments for added functionality and design.

Day Night Roller Blinds

Want the best of both worlds? Day Night Roller blinds combine both blockout and sunscreen roller blinds for optimal convenience. They are installed onto one bracket, however operate independently. The Day and Night Roller blind gives you full control over lighting, and is great for rooms where you want more light control, such as the living room or office space.

The Evolution Of Roller Shades

The humble roller shade has truly evolved over time to fit into modern homes, epitomising simplicity through its build. From more convenient mechanics, to more versatile shade options, you will surely find the best roller blinds for your home.
